9. 10. 15:00-19:00 – The DIRTY Electronics Earache II > workshop led by John Richards

Take part in a Dirty Electronics event exploring unorthodox approaches to electronic music making.

Earache is an anti-modular voltage-controlled acoustic feedback assemblage. A found-resonator and miniature microphone find their way into a feedback circuit and sequencer where real-world resonances collide with electronic abstractions. Wood and nails provide the base materials. Add wire-wrapping techniques in true Dirty Electronics fashion and microprocessor code to the mix to complete this hardware mash-up. Dirty Electronics invite event attendees to join in a séance of resonance.

Earache is based on the one-knob sequencer. Example:https://soundcloud.com/dirty-electronics/duet-for-colossus-sketch-1

Duration: 3 hours
Cost: €30 / 800 CZK per participant
Participants to bring: resonator (for example small tin); piece of scrap wood to hold nails or screws; 9v PP3 battery

Dirty Electronics will perform a set for solo and small group DIY electronics exploring a sticks and string approach. Pieces will include Earache II, Stones and Noises for stones, scrubbing brushes and noise synths, and Fish Face, a speaker ‘swallowed’ in the mouth.

Bio
John Richards explores the idea of Dirty Electronics that focuses on shared experiences, ritual, gesture, touch and social interaction. In Dirty Electronics process and performance are inseparably bound. The ‘performance’ begins on the workbench devising instruments and sound objects and is extended onto the stage through playing and exploring these artefacts. Richards is primarily concerned with the performance of large-group electronic music and DIY electronics, and the idea of composing inside electronics. His work also pushes the boundaries between music, performance art, electronics, and graphic design and is transdisciplinary as well as having a socio-political dimension. Richards has been commissioned to create sound devices and performance works for numerous arts organisations and festivals and has released a series of hand-held synths with designer Adrian Shaughnessy on Mute Records. He has collaborated with, amongst others, Japanese noise artists Merzbow, Pauline Oliveros, Howard Skempton (founder member of the Scratch Orchestra), Gabriel Prokofiev, Nicholas Bullen (ex-Napalm Death and Scorn) and Yan Jun. Other notable collaborations include working with Rolf Gehlhaar (original Stockhausen group), Chris Carter from Throbbing Gristle, Keith Rowe, and choreographer Saburo Teshigawara.
