Archives of Affinities je dosud nejdéle trvajícím projektem, na kterém jsem pracoval, přičemž veškerý můj výzkum a práce z něj vycházejí. Je to nikdy nekončící projekt, jenž není zatížen žádným klientem ani rozpočtem. Díky tomu nemá žádné vnější požadavky a může tak být dílem čisté vášně. Je to projekt hluboce osobní a zároveň mimořádně veřejný. Archives of Affinities je neustále aktualizovaná sbírka architektonických obrazů, které využívají dvojího významu „afinity“ a zároveň podobností spojených s tímto slovem. Archives of Affinities není jen archiv kánonů či tradic, ale spíše věcí přehlížených – architektonických B-sides. Jestliže je kánon sluneční soustavou, pak je Archives of Affinities galaxií. Zatímco je kánon letargicky limitovaným exkluzivním artiklem, Archives of Affinities je prudce expanzivní inkluzivitou. Archives of Affinities nikde nekončí a stále vyhledává a skenuje každý architektonický obraz – dobrý, špatný i ošklivý. Tato sbírka zbytečné architektury s ohromujícími architektonickými vlastnostmi je uspořádána mnoha způsoby, a to za účelem vytvoření tavícího kotlíku pro tvorbu architektury z architektury.

Andrew Kovacs je americký architekt narozen v Chicagu ve státě Illinois, momentálně působící na Kalifornské univerzitě v Los Angeles, kde se na AUD School of Arts and Architecture současně věnuje akademické práci a výzkumu. Andrew vystudoval na Syracuse University, Architectural Association School of Architecture v Londýně a na Princeton University. Díky jeho práci „A Tale of Two Masterplans“ získal v roce 2011 Howard Crosby Butler Travelling Fellowship, díky němuž odcestoval do Kazachstánu, kde se věnoval výzkumu v oblasti architektury a urbanismu dvou hlavních kazašských měst – Astany a Almaty. Jedním z jeho projektů je i denní platfoma „Archive of Affinities“, ve které se věnuje takzvaným architektonickým B-sides, tedy „odvráceným“ stranám architektury.
Architektonické B-sides se na první pohled mohou zdát být zbytečnými díly, které je vhodné spíše zahodit do odpadkového koše architektonické historie. Architektonická disciplína v současnosti disponuje nepřeberným množstvím těchto zbytečných prací. Prozkoumat tato díla, která obvykle nejsou zahrnována pod architektonickou kulturu, však může být dnešním velkým disciplinárním úkolem. Stejně jako jejich protějšky ve filmovém či hudebním průmyslu, architektonické B-sides mají též potenciál stát se kultovní klasikou ztělesňující záměrnou tvrdohlavost a rebelii vůči komerčnímu a disciplinárnímu úspěchu. Tyto B-sides k těmto účelům mohou využívat prvky fantazie, násilí, sexu a temnoty, přinášející výstřednost nebo zvrácenost. Vyřazené vize, nehody, selhání, závady, glitche, divnosti, kuriozity, anomálie a nakonec naprosté hlouposti – B-sides jsou kolektivním skeletem architektonické skříně.
Andrew Pracoval pro RE X v New Yorku, OMA v Rotterdamu či pro Atelier Bow-Wow v Tokiu. Jeho práce z oblasti architektury a urbanismu byly publikovány v magazínech jako Pidgin, Project, Perspecta, Manifest, Metropolis, Clog, Domus či Fulcrum.

The lecture held by American architect, urbanist and a Visiting Assistant Professor at UCLA Architecture & Urban Design in Los Angeles Andrew Kovacs on the topic of „Archives of Affinities“.
Archive of Affinities is the longest project I have ever worked on and all of my research and work emerges from it. It is a project with no deadline, no client, and no budget. Therefore it is a project that has no outside impositions and is free to be a project of pure passion. Archive of Affinities is both deeply personal and extremely public. Archive of Affinities is a constantly updated collection of architectural images that exploits the dual meaning of affinity and the likeness associated with the word as both personal predilection and the relationship between things. Archive of Affinities is not an archive of the canon or of tradition, but rather of the overlooked; or the Architectural B-side. If the canon is a solar system, Archive of Affinities is a galaxy. While the canon is lethargically limited and exclusive, Archive of Affinities is briskly expansive and inclusive. Archive of Affinities is never ending and seeks, searches out, and scans each architectural image – good, bad, and ugly. This collection of useless architecture with overwhelming architectural qualities is arranged in multiple ways to become a crucible for making architecture from architecture.

Andrew Kovacs, born in Chicago, Illinois, is an academic and architect based in Los Angeles, California. He is a Visiting Assistant Professor at UCLA Architecture & Urban Design in Los Angeles. Kovacs studied architecture at Syracuse University (B. Arch), The Architecture Association in London, and Princeton University (M.Arch). In 2011 Kovacs received a Howard Crosby Butler Traveling Fellowship in Architecture from Princeton University for his proposal A Tale of Two Masterplans to study the architecture and urbanism of the two major cities in Kazakhstan—Astana and Almaty. Kovacs, is the creator and curator of Archive of Affinities, a website devoted to the collection and display of architectural b-sides.
An architectural B-side may at first glance appear to be a useless work of architecture that is better suited for history’s trash can. However, the discipline of architecture is already overflowing with useless ‘work.’ To inspect works that have not typically been included under the designation of architecture culture, and to consider them under that designation, might be our most disciplinary task. Like their counterparts in film and music, architectural B-sides may simply be cult classics that exercise a deliberate obstinacy toward commercial or disciplinary success. Architectural B-sides may exploit elements of fantasy, violence, sex, and darkness, conveying idiosyncrasies or perversions. Discarded visions, failures, accidents, outtakes, mishaps, glitches, curiosities, oddities, anomalies, and ultimately follies – architectural B-sides are the collective skeletons of architecture’s closet.
Professionally, Kovacs has worked for REX in New York City, OMA/Rem Koolhaas in Rotterdam and Atelier Bow-Wow in Tokyo. Kovacs’ work on architecture and urbanism has been published widely including Pidgin, Project, Perspecta, Manifest, Metropolis, Clog, Domus, and Fulcrum. His recent design work includes a proposal for a haute dog park in downtown Los Angeles and the renovation of an airstream trailer into a mobile retail store that travels the Pacific Coast Highway.
